What Is The Internet?

The Internet is a series of computer networks linked together through a standard language, TCP/IP.  This massive series of interlinked computer allows users around the world to access various types of content and features located on these servers. Included in this vast network of digital information is the common hypertext documents, electronic mail, and now, IPTV, a type of video service that allows for the streaming of digital video over the Internet, and VOIP, or voice over Internet protocol, which allows for speech conversations over the world wide web.  What originally started out as a way to safely share information across great distances has now transformed into a medium that can allow you to manage almost every aspect of your life.

The Internet works by having your computer read information stored on another computer, but a specific type of program is needed for your computer to properly read the information it pulls from this other computer network.  A browser is just that type of program.  With the ability to pull information from a location and transform the coded language into something every person can understand, the web browser is an essential tool in the use of the Internet.  Here are some of the more popular Internet browsers.

• Firefox-  Currently the most popular type of Internet browser, it allows for a number of easy to use Internet service options, including multi tab browsing, low memory usage, and smooth operation.  Firefox was created by the Mozilla Corporations, a division of the Mozilla Foundation that works solely with online applications, including web browsers and e-mail clients.
• Internet Explorer-  The Microsoft Internet browser is one of the most popular web browsers currently in use.  Having gone through a number of upgrades over the years, it is the standard web browser for all Windows based computer systems.
• Safari-  The Apple web browser was created for use on the Apple Macintosh line of computer, most notably with their operating system, OS. 
• Chrome-  Google, now one of the largest Internet based companies around, unveiled Chrome to the public in September 2008.  It has quickly become one of the more poplar web browsers.
