2D Scanner

2d scanner

There was one time when I had no idea what a 2d scanner was.  Imagine how stupid I felt when I found out that a 2d scanner is just a barcode reader.

If you are looking to buy bar code scanners, I reccommend going to a website like barcodegiant.com because it usually has what you need.  It also has some great sales too.

2d scannerAs such, there are many different technologies of which make up a 2d scanner.  You're aware of the all-to-common bar code reader that cashiers use in stores.  I've seen a device called 'The Cat' which was a computer peripheral used to scan codes and inputted data directly to your computer.  It was essentially a 2d scanner, and very similar to the bar code reader.  It was a play on the mouse because it was trying to become as relevant as the mouse has become for the common pc user.  Obviously, it failed and you have no idea what I'm talking about.  I was a kid when I first used it, and I thought it was pretty cool.  Imagine how I felt when I realized  that it wasn't supported by any other 2d scannercompanies.  It never became a standard like it so much wanted to be.

Anyways, a 2d scanner is not really anything that special.  One of the things that distinguishes one 2d scanner from another is usually the connection that is used.  I think that USB scanners are the most popular because of how easy they are to plug into a computer and begin using almost immediately.  The RS-232 cable is the old connection type, and is not very desirable because you have to connect it to the back of your computer to use it.

You can also see that photo imaging equipment comes with a built in 2d scanner.  It needs a device that scans photo film before beginning develop the film.  That way it doesn't waste any unused film.  This is very common with high-end photo imaging equipment.  I wouldn't be surprised if you don't find a lot of 2d scanners in manufacturing equipment neither.  When I was going to college, I worked as a freight packer for a large shipping company.  I was responsible for managing freight and making sure it made its way into the plane for delivery.  I had my own hand held 2d scanner so that I could scan every box that I came into contact with, but I also noticed that the boxes passed through 2d scanner beams while they were flying down the conveyor belts.  I thought that was pretty cool.

I know that Intel uses 2d scanners in their factories while they are manufacturing computer processors.  Almost every machine they have has a 2d scanner.  A lot of their quality equipment is scanning for defects or mis-measurements.  They have to fix, and replace these 2d scanners from time to time.  So the employees need to be trained on how to do this.  I think this is incredible, but you can probably see how automation is impossible without 2d scanners.  How else do they get input and know how to use it?  Machines don't have eyes, and they have to read codes somehow.
